our story

Welcome to Spring Run Dairy, where our journey began with a passion for sustainable farming and a commitment to quality dairy products.

Dan Lyness, an alumnus of Delaware Valley University with a degree in dairy science, returned to his family's farm with a vision. In 2013, he realized his dream by establishing Spring Run Dairy, marking the beginning of a journey filled with dedication and innovation. As a third-generation Lyness to work the farm, Dan brings a fresh perspective as our first dairy farmer.

Sarah, Dan's partner in life and business, grew up in the local dairy 4-H club and participated in FFA, fostering a lifelong passion for animal welfare and sustainable farming practices. For Sarah, the creamery represents the perfect blend of these passions, allowing her to champion animal welfare while advocating for sustainable farming.

FARMING ROOTS

As the farm continues to operate towards new sustainable approaches, its history is still rooted in family tradition. Spanning 123 preserved acres, it was initially purchased by Dan's grandparents in the 1980s and evolved into a second-generation operation as a beef and crop farm by Dan's father.

While Dan represents the third generation of Lyness family farmers on the land, he pioneered its transition into a dairy operation, marking the first generation of dairy farming. Dan's journey began after his studies at Del Val University, where he honed his skills in the school's dairy. Starting with a small herd and bucket milking, he eventually established the first dairy barn on his grandparents' farm.

Today, Dan takes the lead in managing the farm, with Sarah balancing her career alongside active involvement in farm work during evenings and weekends. Dan's father continues to provide valuable support, particularly with equipment and crop operations. Meanwhile, Dan's mother plays a pivotal role in the successful day-to-day operations of the farm store.

GROWTH & INNOVATION

With the support of USDA's Farm Service Agency, Dan constructed a modern 50-cow tie-stall barn and acquired state-of-the-art equipment to kickstart his dairy venture. Recognizing the potential for growth, Spring Run Dairy diversified its operations by acquiring a milk processing and bottling plant in 2020, enabling it to deliver premium-quality milk directly to local retailers and through the on-farm creamery.

Spring Run Dairy takes pride in its commitment to producing high-quality dairy products. Dan's meticulous approach includes small-batch processing, which preserves the natural integrity and flavor of the milk. Pasteurizing at lower temperatures retains essential proteins while ensuring safety and freshness.

FROM FARM TO TABLE

Today, we proudly bottle and market our high-quality milk and chocolate milk to local retailers and through our on-farm market. We prioritize the well-being of our cows, emphasizing their GMO-free diet and ensuring they receive the best care possible.

COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION

Dan navigates dairy industry challenges with proactive participation in USDA's Dairy Margin Coverage Program, protecting against market fluctuations. With a 123-acre farming operation, the commitment to conservation is a foundational priority. Sustainability is central to the farm's ethos, which is evident in Dan's engagement in conservation efforts like cover crop trials and riparian buffer installation. Collaborations with local organizations and USDA programs further reinforce Spring Run Dairy's commitment to environmental stewardship and harmonious farming practices.
